Abstract

The study pioneers the profiling and understanding of the nature of UPLB student organizations. It generally aimed to synthesize the communication process involved in the development and use of interactive communication platforms for the effective and efficient service delivery to student organization members.

Data were gathered through online survey, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews with selected student leaders and key informants. Records containing data on student organizations and their members from 2012 to 2014 were also consulted.

The professorial lecture described the student organizations based on their nature and types of projects and activities. Majority of student organization members are of good academic standing, from Region IV-A and NCR, and members of only one organization.

Most of the communication-related issues and concerns experienced by the student organizations are internal to their members. They use interactive communication platforms in communicating and addressing their organization-related concerns. Face-to-face remains to be the most preferred communication platform while the use of mobile phones, interactive websites such as OrgsUP, and social networking sites (SNS) serve as support systems that would allow communication between (and among) the students and the office to take place despite distance and time constraints.

Simple but urgent concerns are best addressed through OrgsUP. Internally, inquiries that need immediate response from members are sent through text message or posted on SNS. In terms of information dissemination, OrsUP, text message, and SNS are deemed best used for announcements and notifications on University events, class suspension, registration process, etc.

To effectively and efficiently deliver services to the students, it is recommended that a communication and information technology unit under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs be established.
