Synergistic effects of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) and Bradyrhizobium japonicum on field grown soybean

Abstract
The growth and yield response of field grown soybean (Glycine max) to inoculation with vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) and Bradyrhizobium japonicum were tested and compared with uninoculated controls and fertilizer nitrogen treatments. The experiments were conducted at two sites in Nueva Vizcaya [Philippines] (Wet season 2010) and in Batangas [Philippines] (Dry season 2011). The inoculants used were VAMRI for mycorrhiza and NitroPlus for bradyrhizobia. Dual inoculation of soybean with VAMRI and NitroPlus for significantly increased yield by 55% in one site in Nueva Vizcaya and 138% in Batangas over those inoculated with NitroPlus alone. Fresh biomass yield was 51% to 79% higher when the two inoculants were combined than when used alone in Nueva Vizcaya. Mycorrhizal and rhizobia innoculated soybean had significantly higher nodule mass and number and dry matter yield than the non-mycorrhizal counterpart. Addition of N fertilizer to NitroPlus inoculated soybean also significantly increased seed yield by 55% in one site in Nueva Vizcaya and 138% in Batangas over those inoculated with NitroPlus alone. Fresh biomass yield was 51% to 79% higher when the two inoculants were combined than when used alone in Nueva Vizcaya. Mycorrhizal and rhizobia inoculated soybean also significantly higher nodule mass and number and dry matter yield than non-mycorrhizal counterpart. Addition of N fertilizer to NitroPlus inoculated soybean also significantly increased seed yields. Results demonstrate the synergistic effects of both mycorrhiza and bradyrhizobia on soybean at two out of three study sites. VAM apparently contributed to greater nitrogen fixation by the legume-bradyrhizobia symbiosis through enhanced nutrient acquisition by the host. To obtain the maximum beneficial impact on plant growth and yield, dual or co-inoculation with two or more efficient microbial inoculants is recommended.
