Demographic profile of Saug Watershed

Abstract

This study aims to fully understand the stakeholder communities within and around the periphery of Saug watershed. Hence a demographic characterization was conducted. The watershed was classified into three categories namely upstream, midstream and downstream since economic activity in the watershed varies in a different strategic locations. Barangays [villages] within the watersheds was chosen by means of simple random sampling and secondary data were gathered from municipal profiles available in the internet. Respondents from the different barangays were randomly selected to avoid researcher bias. A total of 2110 respondents were interviewed using an individual household survey questionnaire. Results of the survey showed that majority of the respondents were male at 84.69 percent and belong to 3 to 4 household size. Around 90% of the respondents belong to the productive or working population and has median age of 54 years old. Around 84.36% or 1780 respondents are already married while only 6.49% or 137 are still single. The rest are separated, widowed or unknown during the time of the interview. Most of them are Catholics with a percent distribution of 69.81%. Majority of the respondents of Saug watershed are Cebuano in ethnic origin and around 36.87% know how to speak and understand the Filipino language. It has a literacy rate of 96.82% and roughly 3% declared that have no access to formal education.
