Abstract
Coping has been a subject studied by many. In March 2020, the whole country was put on lockdown to prevent the further spread of the COVID-19 virus, resulting in a lot of people staying locked in their homes. Since people were stuck in their homes, a lot of them consumed audiovisual media as a coping mechanism due to the stress brought to them by the pandemic. In this study, the personal statements of select UPRHS Senior High School students were gathered in order to unearth some insights regarding their own experiences with using visual media as a coping mechanism. The participants for this phenomenological study were selected based on whether they consumed media during the pandemic or not, and were interviewed via Facebook Messenger, as well as in-person, regarding the stories about their own ways of coping through visual media . A narrative approach was used to analyze the data the study obtained, taking into account factors, such as stressants, consumption period. The study showed that consuming media during the pandemic helped the participants stabilize their mental health and keep them from getting bored, generally impacting them positively. Using visual media as a coping mechanism is a valid way of dealing with stress and boredom; it is recommended to try using media as a way of coping during long periods of isolation in order to lessen the degree of boredom experienced.
