Abstract
Kalye hip-hop is a contemporary term for a collection of counterdominant narratives delivered by hip-hop artists who hail from the broad concept of the "kalye". In particular, kalye hip-hop is an outlet in which "kalye" artists can safely speak and make art about their experiences, namely struggles and triumphs, to an audience that will both listen and be entertained. This research intends to benefit those who identify as taga-kalye as well as those who observe this dynamic of sharing by listening in on the highs and lows of artists' experiences in the kalye to foster understanding among distinguished communities to shed light on the genres and topics dealt with in the music of the kalye. This study, through its usage of Fairclough's three-dimensional framework for Critical Discourse Analysis, aims to establish the situation of kalye as a scene and community through the eight songs' lyricism fromn Spotify's editorial playlist, "Kalye Hip-Hop." Through discussions of themes related to the kalye, the level of text revealed that the lyrics utilized linguistic tools such as repetition, word choice, and register to concretize and emphasize the artists' own experiences. On the level of discursive practice, artists used name-calling and the concept of othering to position themselves in the kalye community and those outside of it and realize their identity in the process. As for the level of sociocultural practice, discourses regarding them form within the kalye itself, highlighting the uniqueness in the artists' experiences despite having the commonality of identifying themselves as a part of the kalye. These findings shed light on current practices that reflect what people may end up considering to be related to the kalye and how these resulting perceptions add to the ongoing discourse of the very concept or image of the kalye.
