Abstract
Social media serves as a digital environment that impacts body-image perception and self-confidence. The study aims to analyze the effects of social media platforms on the body image perception and self-confidence of the University of the Philippines Rural High School students using a quantitative descriptive-correlational research design. 50 students (25 Grade 11 and 25 Grade 12 students) were randomly sampled for the study. Anthropometric data (Height, Weight, BMI) were collected from the students alongside psychometric data from a survey based on the Body Appreciation Scale-2 and a modified version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale.. The average amount of time spent on social media was 6.5 hours per day which suggests that social media was a primary environment for the senior high school students. The data analysis found that hours spent on social media had a weak negative correlation with self-confidence meaning that increased time spent on social media associates with lower levels of self-confidence. The same correlation was observed between hours spent on social media and body image perception however this relationship was not statistically significant. The linear regression model revealed a stark contrast in social media’s impact on body-image perception and self-confidence. While social media usage explained a negligible 1.46% of variance in body-image perception (p > 0.05), it accounted for a statistically significant 8.54% of variance in self-confidence (p > 0.05). These findings reveal that hours spent on social media is only a minor influence on the body-image perception and self-confidence of senior high school students attending UPRHS. Further research is recommended to pivot towards peer-group dynamics, family influence, and other factors that may have a larger influence on the body-image perception and self-confidence of UPRHS senior high school students.
