Beyond the horizon: evaluating the simulation game of Mt. Makiling biodiversity

Abstract
Mt. Makiling is a biodiversity hotspot in the Philippines, with various flora and fauna, such as the rafflesia (Rafflesia lagascae), and the Luzon hornbill (Penelopides manillae). Turning this environment into an interactive simulation to explore the many biotic and abiotic factors surrounding the mountain, as well as the folklore inspired by it, specifically the famous and enduring myth of Maria Makiling, a diwata and guardian of the mountain. In this game, the player follows her journey, as she goes down the mountain to see the current state of it and help out its inhabitants through her ability to transform into various fauna along the way. Adopting the ADDIE framework, the study integrated ecological data with the development of a game using the Godot engine. The study was done using a design-based research approach and integrating the 5/10 Method. Results showed that overall style, 2D artwork, in-game animation, placing of interface elements, and clarity of language all rated above 90%, while the steepness of difficulty was rated the lowest at 67.6%. A test of accuracy was conducted as well, showing a mean rating of 88.9%. Overall, the study shows the simulation as a viable and effective tool for showing Mt. Makiling’s diverse and complex nature. To increase the use of simulations and games in conservation efforts, future developers should focus on integrating grounded and realistic biological and ecological factors into mechanics alongside the authentic representation of folklore to ensure that the gameplay depth reflects real-world biodiversity and cultural representation.
