Abstract

Physics is central to all fields of engineering and stands as one of the most universally applied sciences across various careers. However, it is often perceived as the most challenging Science subject for students in the Philippines. Students at the UPRHS first encountered physics in Grade 10. The objective of this research is to identify the specific obstacles Grade 10 students at UPRHS face in physics and determine ways to resolve them. With the increasing popularity and influence of video games among Filipino youth, digital Game-Based Learning is a good alternative teaching method that can be used to enhance the students’ motivation to learn physics. The primary focus of this research is the development of a game prototype within Roblox Studio, designed to incorporate engaging video game mechanics into a lesson on three-dimensional projectile motion. This game was playtested by students who voluntarily participated from one Grade 10 class. Following the playtest, they answered a questionnaire regarding their experience. The game was also tested by UPRHS teachers from STEM departments, who assessed the game’s usability and effectiveness as a learning tool using a similar questionnaire that incorporates the System Usability Scale (SUS). Based on the results of the questionnaires, Game-Based Learning effectively enhanced students’ motivation to learn projectile motion. However, the prototype and the platform used displayed some usability issues and limitations. Despite these, our findings indicate that thoroughly developed and polished Game-Based Learning tools have the potential to positively impact physics education for both students and teachers. We recommend further research and experimentation with Game-Based Learning on other physics topics using varying platforms.
