Abstract
Helicobacter pylori is one of the most widespread bacteria, affecting about half of the world's population. H. pylori is known for being the cause of several complications such as ulcers, gastritis and even cancer in the digestive system. Conventional diagnostic methods in detecting H. pylori infection include colonoscopy and gastroscopy offer more accurate depictions of disease prevention for eventual treatment. Albeit being a prevalent bacterium causing several diseases, there have been only a few studies available locally. Respondents included people detected with H. pylori infection at a local private hospital in Laguna using H. pylori school test antigen (n = 5) and rapid urease test (n = 24). A survey was subsequently conducted about the respondents' sociodemographic and socioeconomic data, nutritional diet and hygienic habits. Statistical analyses (odds ratio (95% confidence interval) and multi correspondence analysis) were employed to measure the relationship of the factors discussed and the infection rate of H. pylori. The results showed a 41.4% prevalence among the 29 collected samples. Moreover, almost all of the factors showed no statistically significant analysis except for the civil status (Odds Ratio (95% CI): .05 0.01-.15) on married, 1.0 on previously married, 29 (.03-2.69) on unmarried). The study provided a preliminary investigation of the prevalence of H. pylori infection in a local community; however, a much more stringent research design is still in order. A larger and bigger sampling frame is recommended for further studies to eliminate erratic effects of contrasting outliers and to provide a better model of diseases incidence. It is also worth noting how cross-cultural differences can influence diseases incidence of common pathogens such as H. pylori.
