Abstract

Perception towards agriculture, even in the context of education, among Filipinos is considered to be lacking (Zamora, 2015). This study focused on the attitude on agricultural education being given by 325 students from three different junior high schools in the agricultural community of Bay, Laguna. The sampled students from these three schools in Bay were surveyed to determine how knowledgeable and interested they are on agricultural education and to identify what factors affected such perception they had shown. Teachers specializing in agricultural education from the three schools were then interviewed for more in-depth understanding on how and why the students show such perception on agriculture. Results showed that majority of the junior high students from the three sampled schools in Bay have low levels of knowledge and interest on agricultural education. Despite the attempts and promising capabilities of the schools such as the presence of resources and the highly-agricultural orientation of the Bay community itself to initiate and provide an agricultural educational program, agricultural education is found to still be receiving low perception from the students and lacking support from the authorities.
