Abstract

Social networking sites(SNSs) and mental health issues have been becoming prominent throughout the years. This study aimed to see if there is a relationship between usage of SNSs and mental health issues, particularly among the University of the Philippines Rural High School Junior High students. A questionnaire containing questions about SNS usage, SNS interactions, effects of SNS on behavior, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21(DASS-21) was distributed to 228 randomly selected students from UPRHS. The mental health status of the respondents was measured in terms of the DASS-21 questionnaire's Severity Levels: Depression, Anxiety, and Stress levels. Spearman rank-order correlation was used to test the relation of the amount of time and severity levels while the chi-square test of independence was used to show the relationship between SNS interaction along with its content and stress, anxiety, and depression. Time spent in using SNS was found to have a significant although weak relationship with the severity levels. Time spent in using SNS contributes to stress, anxiety, and depression thus it can be considered as one of the factors affecting the mental health issues of students. Among the most commonly used SNS platforms by students, Twitter was a better medium of expression for the respondents rather than Facebook because they were able to express themselves more through posting and sharing of their feelings, emotions, and personal rants. Common activities done and the content of posts made on Twitter by the respondents, such as liking, commenting, posting, and sharing were significantly related with the severity levels; most of them were either moderately or weakly related. This means that the activities done on Twitter are factors which affect the mental health issues of the students. Additionally, posts about feelings, emotions, and personal rants on Twitter were found to be slightly associated with anxiety levels. This means that expressing feelings or thoughts on Twitter is a factor that affects the anxiety levels of the students.
