Abstract

Since social media has been integrated in people’s daily lives, frequent usage of social media sites brought positive and negative influences on an individual’s self-perception. For instance, the prevalence of beauty and fashion-related content had been influential on how people, especially females, reflect on themselves. This study focused on teenage females’ views in their self-perception based on their usage of social media sites in terms of beauty. A survey was conducted to UP Rural High School female students ages 13-17 using the Qualtrics platform and correlational analysis was performed to check the relationship between variables. An interview was also conducted to further investigate the results from the survey. Based on the responses, social media usage specifically with becoming updated with the latest beauty trends, finding “fit inspirations”, becoming updated with the latest fashion trends, and comparing themselves to other people in social media are positively correlated. However, there is not enough evidence that the total number of hours spent on social media can have a big impact on teenage females’ changes in their self-perception. Further research on the study is recommended particularly on the other aspects of self-perception.
