Abstract
Video games continue to grow at an exponentially large rate, leading to its ever-growing consumption and market potential to sway buyers in playing games, resulting in enormous growth in more than 40 years, and revenues of hundred billions of dollars , and while the industry continuously booms, multiple studies have been conducted that playing video games can have negative or positive effects to a person, studies say that it may lead to addictions, sleep deprivation, etc; other studies claim that it can improve coordination, logical thinking, etc. In the study, the main goal is determining whether playing video games improve an individual’s mental well-being/happiness. Using the quantitative research method, two types of surveying were utilized to gather information, online and in-person surveys, and to easily reach our target sample of senior high school students. The questionnaire consists of: Happiness, utilizing the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, Gaming Activity, and Mental Well-being of the students. In order to analyze the gathered data, the spearman rank-order was applied. After analysis, the students were generally happy and had better mental well-being even without video gaming. Other results include that gaming engagement does not have a relationship towards one’s happiness and mental well-being. Overall, playing video games does not show evidence that affects an individual’s happiness/well-being, but there are other factors such as lifestyle, social life that play more substantial roles in learning one’s happiness/mental well-being. However, this study only reaches a certain population of students and may not accurately represent other students’ experiences playing video games.
