Abstract

Mental health has been a hot topic for the world especially since the pandemic came in. Filipinos, in relation to their religion, are conservative and traditional, yet are no exception to mental health issues. However, some or most Filipinos are still unaware of mental health issues and the existing stigma encapsulating them. It is necessary to address these problems as it plays an important role in human well-being. The senior high school students of the University of the Philippines Rural High School (UPRHS) are no exception to mental health problems. The attention given to the mental well-being of the students by the university especially when the pandemic started is indisputable; webinars, guidance talks, academic breaks, and several adjustments are made to prioritize the mental well-being of the students. But despite the efforts of the university to help reduce the burden of UPRHS students, we could not deny that some students require more help as they experience the terrors of being mentally ill. Seeking professional help is a must; however, not everyone has access to or is open to seeking psychological treatment. In this study, we surveyed 97 Grade 12 Students from UPRHS using Google Forms and face-to-face distributing of questionnaires about their common mental health concerns that they have experienced during the past six years; their common coping strategies; and the factors that prevented those who never availed any professional counseling; and the factors which encouraged those who had. The results of this study shows that the most common mental health concern experienced by UPRHS Grade 12 Students is academic concern. The most common coping strategy that the respondents found useful is the use of distractions. Shopping, on the other hand, was the most common coping strategy that the students did not find useful. Out of 97 respondents, 13 answered that they have availed professional help. The most common factor that encouraged them to seek professional help is the availability of health services. The 84 other respondents who have not availed professional help chose the sense of self-reliance as the most common factor that impeded their help-seeking behavior. 67 respondents were also willing to share their experienced mental health concerns. 63 of them were able to share these concerns with their friend/s.
