Abstract
Following the objective of the Samsung Philippines Algorithm Research for K-11 Students (SPARK11) Internship Program, students who volunteered to take part in the challenge are tasked to create a coding program to either find original solutions or improve existing solutions to current and relevant societal problems. This study, in collaboration with the SPARK11 Program, aims to simulate the spread of the COVID-19 virus mainly through the Breadth-First Search (BFS) algorithm. Using this algorithm, the team is able to identify susceptible, infected, and recovered nodes within the given graph. This simulation model aims to aid virologists further their research on current and future viruses, as well as to help society further their understanding of how long COVID-19 can spread through a given infection rate. Even though the virus has died down in the current time, COVID-19 is still a prevalent problem as people still get infected from it. Preparation for the idea contest presentation lasted 8+ weeks along with the help of the University of the Philippines Rural High School (UPRHS)’s information technology instructors and Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation (SEPCO)’s engineers and mentors. On May 26, 2023, students traveled to Samsung PH Headquarters in Taguig City and presented their own solutions for current problems. The coded program was relatively successful, however, there were many holes to fill the gaps of the research. Various problems emerged such as: the code was unable to identify if the individual was vaccinated or not, the code was unable to update infection rates on a weekly basis, and the code was unable to identify if an individual had undergone home or hospital quarantine while infected or susceptible.
