Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, despite many industries being struck by immense damages, the mobile esports industry recorded exponential growth nonetheless. This study investigates the prospect of having a part-time or full-time career in mobile esports in the Philippines. The researchers gathered relevant data, such as possible careers and career dimensions, regarding the mobile esports industry through thorough table research. Four (4) careers (professional players, online streamers, shoutcasters/ hosts, and team managers) are directly linked to the act of playing, and three (3) dimensions (financial gain, growth and tenureship, and work-life balance) are significant to the overall work experience in the industry were also identified. The researchers then conducted key informant interviews with willing professional stakeholders from the industry. The researchers identified the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the industry from the interviews and analyzed the resulting data by implementing a SWOT analysis. In turn, with the interplay among its SWOT, the industry faces threats in growth and tenureship and weaknesses in work-life balance, but it can seize opportunities for financial gain. Mobile esports should capitalize on its vast financial assets to conduct research and development and foster education on growth and tenureship and work-life balance to resolve weaknesses and mitigate threats in these two dimensions. Pursuing a part-time or full-time career in the mobile esports industry in the Philippines is more feasible with the resolution of the identified issues within the industry. Education is also important as it helps the people within the industry address their interpersonal issues and promote growth and tenureship within the industry. Implementing policies regarding work-life balance is another significant task to establish a more supportive and healthier working environment for professionals.
