Abstract
Due to current advancements in technology, society has evolved to have an increased dependency on gadgets and the internet. This study aims to focus on a particular phenomenon related to this, which is children's consumption of online content, specifically YouTube Kids, and its risks to their development. Breaking it down, the objectives of this research include: (1) identifying which specific elements in videos bring forth harmful messages to kids by checking the following aspects: age appropriateness, content quality, design features, and learning objectives; (2) recognizing recurring inappropriate themes that are embedded in the supposedly safe shows; and (3) determining the potential negative effects kids may experience from watching these videos. A YouTube Video Evaluation Rubric from Neumann and Herodotou's paper, "Evaluating YouTube Videos for Young Children," in 2020 was used to assess 2 videos from 6 most-subscribed English-speaking channels creating “kid-friendly” content based on Statista 2021. Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) discussion with experts were done to validate the concluding result from the initial data gathered. The results show that 7 out of 12 of the videos are not recommended to children. Most of the videos scored low in the learning objectives criterion, as they lacked learning elements that will support children’s cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional growth. Some videos also included potentially scary elements and inappropriate behavior reinforcement. Furthermore, issues focusing on the subconscious internalizing of unprogressive norms, imitating improper attitudes and actions, and a lack of social and sensory learning were observed. The study hopes to spark more studies in relation to this issue, as it emphasizes the importance of the experiences that children have in their formative years and their association with their internet consumption.
