Evaluation of solar crop drying at MRRTC, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija
Date

Abstract
Evaluations were made on the performance of the flat plate solar collector and the over-all drying efficiency of the solar dryer, with and without a back-up heater. Solar collection efficiency of 27.20 percent and maximum air heating to 53 °C were obtained. The average heat energy gained by air passing through the collector was 7.34 MegaJoules per square meter of the collector. With a solar collector area of 53.54 m^2 and air flow rate of 1.42 m^3/sec two tons (2000 kg) of palay were dried in 9 hours without a back-up heater. Drying time of 6 to 7 hours was possible with back-up heater. To maintain drying air temperature of 43 °C, back-up heating for 30 to 40 percent of the total time of drying was necessary. The quality of the dried palay were compared with those dried by direct sundrying. Results showed that palay dried by solar crop dryer have higher germination percentage, milling recovery and whole grain recovery than those dried by direct sundrying.
