Abstract

The effects of maturity on hardness and shear resistance of coconut husks were investigated. Coconut fruits which were 10, 11 and 12 months old were studied. The modified Janka ball hardness test showed that among the three maturity levels considered, the husks of the 11-month old coconuts were the hardest. Shear tests done at the husk and shell interface showed that the resistance to interfacial shear of the 12-month old coconuts was higher that the 10-month old nuts. There was no significant difference in the interfacial shear resistance of the 11 and 12 month old coconuts. However, the resistance of both the 11 and 12 month old coconuts against fiber-to-fiber shear is lower that the resistance of the 10-month old nuts.
