Effects of climatic factors on two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars under tropical conditions

Date

Abstract

Sixteen weekly staggered planting of two wheat varieties, Trigo 1 and Trigo 2 were planted from October, 1982 to January, 1983 to determine the climatic influence from planting to maturity and identify the suitable planting dates and its effect on wheat phenology. Results showed that highest yields were obtained when wheat was planted in the month of December. The number of filled florets and 1000-seed weight were highly and positively correlated with yield of both varieties while length of ripening period and total growth duration were negatively correlated with yield. Longer vegetative periods were found to be highly correlated with high relative humidity and short air temperature range during the period. Longer reproductive periods were attributed to high solar radiation, low wind velocity, low maximum air temperature and low mean air temperature during that stage. Longer ripening period was found to be highly correlated with high relative humidity, low mean and maximum air temperature and low wind velocity during the same period. The total growth duration of the crop was positively correlated with relative humidity but negatively correlated to maximum air temperature, air temperature range and wind velocity. Low maximum and mean air temperature coupled with low wind velocity during the vegetative stage tend to favour higher yields. Longer sunshine duration, high solar radiation, low mean air temperature and low relative humidity during the reproductive stage also tend to increase yield. At the ripening stage, high maximum air temperature, long air temperature range, high wind velocity and low relative humidity were found to favour higher yield. For the whole growth duration, high air temperature range, low minimum air temperature and low relative humidity generally resulted in higher grain yield.
