Abstract

The effects of curing temperature, curing time, cooling time, coating thickness, loading rate, and time duration between coat application and start of curing on the strain sensitivity of pili resin when used as brittle coat for experimental stress analysis were determined. About two kilograms of dried pili resin was gathered and purified using benzene (C6H6) as solvent in the laboratory and used as brittle coat. The solution consisted of 38% resin and 62% benzene by volume or 45% resin and 55% benzene by weight. Results showed that at a constant curing time of one hour, a temperature of 110 °C produced a brittle coat with uniform cracks without flaking when the strips are subjected to uniaxial load. Curing temperatures of 110 to 130° did not significantly affect pili resin strain sensitivity. Slight thermal crazing, however, was observed for the coats cured at temperatures of 120 and 130 °C. At a temperature of 90 °C, the time needed to cure pili resin with no problem on thermal crazing was about 90 to 150 minutes. After curing pili resin at 90 °C for 1 1/2 hours, the 0.10 mm thick coat appeared sensitive with uniform cracks compared to 0.20 and 0.30 mm thick coat. Loading rates of 0.14 to 1.4 cm/sec did not significantly affect pili resin strain sensitivity. For the 0.1 mm thick coat cured at 100 °C for one hour, pili resin coating applied one hour before curing was found sensitive than those which were applied 40 to 64 hours earlier. For the range of the variables chosen in the study, the strain sensitivity of pili resin was linearly related to curing temperature, curing time, cooling time, and coating thickness. Pili resin coating exhibited stable strain sensitivity when repeatedly tested at the same curing temperature and coating thickness of 130 ° C and 0.10 mm, respectively; a characteristic which is desirable for brittle coating material.
