Phenotypic characterization and genetic parameter estimation of the productive and reproductive traits of pedigreed Boholano Philippine native chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus L. )

Date

Abstract

This study phenotypically characterized and estimated genetic parameter for productive and reproductive traits of pedigreed Boholano Philippine native chicken. Traits included are qualitative and quantitative characteristics, body weight at hatch (BW1), body weight at 21 days (BW21), body weight at 45 days (BW45), body weight at 75 days (BW75), body weight at 100 days (BW100), body weight at 120 days (BW120) egg weight (EW), fertility and hatchability. Data were collected from 3 generations (from August 2013 to December 2016) at Ubay Stock Farm (USF) Lomangog Ubay, Bohol. Genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure.

Heritability estimates for body weight at different ages ranged from 0.05 to 0.28. Heritability estimate for egg weight was 0.15. Meanwhile, estimated heritability for fertility and hatchability were 0.07 and 0.03, respectively. Genetic correlation among body weight at different ages ranged from 0.10 to 0,84. Low positive correlation (0.05) was observed between fertility and hatchability. These result could be used as a guide for planning, conservation and improvement of local chicken in the Philippines.
