Qualitative interpretation of landscape features by airphoto-interpretation technique

Date

Abstract

An investigation was conducted to determine the extent of use of qualitative interpretation of landscape feature delineations by airphoto interpretation technique in defining land boundaries that separate areas having soils of related characteristics. A land strip 7 km wide and 17 km long was chosen for this study because the landscape offered wide variability in slope, surface drainage, and land use.

Three land areas were delineated: a level lowland having coarse dendritic surface drainage pattern under lowland rice (LS area) ; a gently sloping, rolling, and undulating upland with medium dendritic surface drainage pattern and grown to sugarcane (US area); and a steeply rolling to hilly and mountainous highland with a fine dendritic surface drainage pattern under a diverse type of cropping ranging from field crop to coconut plantations (HS area).

Land boundaries established in the study coincided with the soil type boundaries b based on the map prepared by the Bureau of Soils with minor modifications in the LS area.

Although limited field checks were made to characterize the soils in each delineated land area, the results showed that surface drainage, slope, and land use delineations done on airphotos could be useful in defining boundaries of areas having soils with related characteristics. Because of the same constraint of limited number of samples taken, there was no relationship established between soil physical characteristics of surface layers and the different landscape features studied.

It is suggested for future studies therefore, that a higher density of ground sampling be conducted in order to ensure precision of boundary placement.
