Sustainability of AEOP-Assisted outreach projects: the case of Aklan Agricultural College

Date

9-1990

Abstract

The general objective of the study was to determine the sustainability of the AEOP-assisted outreach projects of the farmer-cooperators of the Aklan Agricultural College. Specifically, it aimed to (a) present the socio-economic profile of the AEOP's farmer-cooperators in the six villages; (b) determine the extent of sustainability of the farmer-cooperators' crop and animal projects; (c) find out the differences in the sustainability of the farmer cooperators' projects among the six villages; and (d) identify the factors related to sustainability of these projects.

The study was conducted among 206 AEOP farmer -cooperators in the municipality of Banga, Aklan. Data were gathered using an interview schedule.

The results revealed that the respondents were generally old (53 years), have attended elementary grades, have five members in the family, have been farming for 27 years, and earning an annual mean income of Php7,974.20 from their farming activities.

Sixty-six percent of the respondents were owner-operators. Majority of the projects established were on vegetables, citrus, piggery and poultry. Sixty-seven percent of the crop projects and 58 percent of the animal projects were still in existence at the time of the study.

The great majority of the respondents adopted the crop production practices introduced by the SOAs, whereas only 20 percent adopted the animal production practices.

Citrus project was the respondents' highest income earner followed by rice (rainfed) project. The respondents' mean income from both crop and animal projects was Php12,042 per annum. As a whole, the respondents' income from the projects was rated as low.

Crop and animal projects in Sibalew were significantly different from those in other villages.

The correlation coefficient test revealed that eight of the 14 predictor variables showed highly significant relationships and two were significantly related to the sustainability of AEOP-assisted outreach projects.

Using the multiple regression analysis, the variance in the sustainability of the AEOP-assisted projects was best explained by the respondents' civil status, educational attainment., household size, tenure status, number of SOA-assisted projects, availment of AEOP loan, participation in AEOP-sponsored activities and perception of the AEOP.

The study concludes that the AEOP-assisted outreach projects in Aklan had moderate sustainability even five years after the AEOP's technical, financial, and material assistance were withdrawn from the villagers.
