Decision-making and Leadership Pattern of Rural Women in Two Leyte Villages, Philippines

Abstract

The study sought to find out the general characteristics of the farmers' wives and other factors which are associated with their decision, extent of involvement and leadership roles in farm, home and community affairs.

Two barangays of Baybay, Leyte were covered involving 143 farmers' wives as respondents. A structured interview schedule was employed in gathering the data. Data were analyzed using percentages, means, chi-square test and a rating scale.

The findings revealed that the mean age of the respondents was 44.5 years; 79.7% had elementary schooling; the majority (36.0%) were married with a mean of 22.5 years of marital relationship; and they belonged to Catholic families.

Most farmers' wives were housekeepers. The mean monthly family income was 1,405.50 derived from various sources. poultry and livestock, business, farm, handicrafts and employment of family members. The mean size of rural households was 5.3 with a mean number of children of 4.4 and 2.1 mean number of extended family members living with them.

The independent decision of the wife was more concentrated in the following areas: house-hold- financial aspect of children's education, sending/fetching the children to/from the school, selection of the best school to enroll and seeking of frequent advice on family planning; farm-economic burden of allotting money, acquisition of budget, handling of finances and listing of farm expenses; community - organizational affiliation and involvement in the rural projects and development programs.

Securing the budget for farm activities was directly associated with occupation, family income, household size, and length of marriage of the farmers' wives. Period to harvest farm produce was significantly related to occupation, family income, household size, length of marriage, age and education of the farmers' wives.
