Women Leaders and Rural Women's Participation in Some Development Programs in Petchabun Province Thailand: a case study

Abstract

This study mainly sought to analyze how women leaders motivate rural women to participate in development programs/projects.

The study was conducted in amphoes Lomkhao and Chondan, Petchabun province, where development programs are being conducted.

Two hundred fifty respondents, composed of 50 women leaders randomly selected, involved in development programs in two categories economic and health, and 200 women members randomly selected from these programs, were the respondents in this study.

Data were gathered by interviewing the.respondents with the help of a structured interview schedule. Appropriate scores were give to certain variables for statistical analysis.

The socio-economic characteristics of the women leaders which are age, income, educational attainment, family size, farm size. landholding, and leadership style were not significantly related to the extent of rural women participation from the point of view of the women leaders. Only study tour (under leadership style) was significant at .05 level.

The communication behavior of women leaders was significantly related to the women members' extent of participation in development programs from point of view of the members, at .05 level.

The other motivational factors which affected the rural women's participation in development programs were money assistance, threat of punishment and study-tours, all at high participation of the members, but not significant at .05 level. On the other hand, only goal-setting was significant at .05.

The reasons of members for participating in development programs were to improve family income, for interest or improvement of the village.

Most of the rural women thought of favoring their leaders because they were sincere, interested and broad-minded. Moreover, the findings revealed that the task-oriented leaders were more effective in motivating rural women's participation and expectations of reaching the goals. However, the women leaders were not only task-oriented because all in the medium shared leadership level. Then leaders were also elected by their members.
