Evaluation of the practical arts program of the 1973 revised secondary education curriculum in Cagayan Valley, Philippines

Date

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the extend of the implementation of the practical arts program. The study was conducted in 30 schools in Region II. There were 688 respondents, composed of 598 senior high school students, 60 practical arts teachers, and 30 administrators. The data were collected by means of structured questionnaires and personal interview.

All the respondents evaluated the practical arts program as a whole to be "satisfactory"." The overall attainment of objectives was "satisfactory." The objectives were "best" attained by the National Trade-Technical High Schools and "least" by the Private Sectarian and Barangay High Schools.

The combined assessment of five selected factors was "satisfactory." The Barangay and Municipal High Schools were judged "poor" in all the five factors; the Private Sectarian and Provincial High Schools were rated "poor" in physical facilities and guidance services; and the Private Non-sectarian High Schools were also assessed "poor" in physical facilities.

From these findings, there were schools in the study population that spent more per student and yet they provided inferior educational resources and services to the students.

There is a very strong ground therefore to believe that the practical arts program implemented by school categories were not equivalent in contents and quality.

The study implies that if adequate funds are appropriated to the different high schools, better implementation of the practical arts program can be attained.
