The effect of tillage and rate and method of fertilizer application on sorghum grown after dry-seeded and transplanted lowland rice

Abstract
Three field experiments of sorghum following dry seeded (DSR) and transplanted rice (TPR) were conducted at IRRI Experiment Farm, Los Banos, Philippines. The objective was to determine the nutrient requirement, to study the effect of tillage, method of basal fertilizer application on sorghum grown after DSR and TPR, and crop establishment after TPR in rainfed area.
Phosphorus did not significantly affect the yield of sorghum either grown after DSR or TPR. But nitrogen fertilizer significantly increased the grain yield of sorghum up to 100 kg/ha.
Different tillage treatment on sorghum grown after different rice growing system resulted in different date of planting.
Sorghum grown after different rice growing system resulted in different date of planting. Sorghum grown under zero tillage after DSR, which was planted 15 days after harvesting the rice, gave the highest yield. This could be attributed to the high amount of uniform distribution of rainfall during the growing period, high residual soil moisture, optimum soil impedance and high water soluble Mn at planting time.
Method of basal fertilizer application significantly affected yield or sorghum grown under zero tillage after TPR. Dibbling method was superior to surface band method. However, the labor requirement was very high.
Dibbling seed on unprepared land, or beside the furrow, or drilling seeds in the furrow gave no significant difference in grain yield, However, they had significantly higher yield than high tillage.
Economic analysis showed that in rainfed area, growing sorghum after DSR under zero tillage and basal fertilizer surface banded gave high net return. Growing sorghum after TPR gave negative net return.
