Abstract

For a total of 10 months, the study was conducted at three hunting sites and among smallholder farmers in subdistricts of Merauke and Okaba, province of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, to describe the production of captive deer based on live weight and heart girth; assess the nutritional status based on blood serum; assess nematode population based on the feces; and describe the hunting gear used and the exploitation. The data were paralyzed using student t-test.

The highest deer exploitation was from Okaba hunting area with the average of 26.3 deer (46.99%), followed by Wendu/Kumbe with 20.9 deer (37.33%) and Wasur 58.8 deer (15.71%) per month. The total deer hunted 56 deer per month. Exploitation differed (P<0.05) between Wasur and Wendu/Kumbe,Wasur and Okaba, and Wendu/Kumbe and Okaba.

The gear used in hunting were categorized into three: Method A hunters used bow, arrow, spear, and native dog;

Merhod B hunters used bow, arrow, spear, native dogs and canoe or boat; and Method C hunters used firearm, dogs, motorbike and/or car. The average deer killed using Method A was 13.7 deer (12.97%), Method B was 31.5 deer (29.83%) and Method C was 60.4 deer (57.2%).

Hunting between dry and wet seasons did not differ significantly in the three hunting areas, but in Wasur more dear were killed during the dry season (P<0.05). More male were exploited than female in Okaba, and Wendu/Kumbe than Wasur.

More species of forage were offered to the deer in Okaba than Merauke. The percentage of crude fat and phosphorus of green feeds in Merauke was higher (P<0.05) than in Okaba.

The average daily grains in Merauke were 61.20 g and in Okaba 67.78 g; there was no significant difference (P<0.05) between these values. For improvement in body length, the values were 8.6cm and 9.5cm; and for heart girth, 12.4cm and 13.5 cm, for Merauke and Okaba, respectively.

There was no significant differences in the components of blood serum between the two areas. The values for Merauke and Okaba, respectively were: for protein, 6.96 and 6.73 mg/100ml; for urea, 40.5 and 42.8 mg/100 ml; for initial level of calcium, 6.47 and
