Text structures used by high science ability students in organizing their recall of a science expository text.

Abstract

This study was an initial attempt to investigate howknowledge of text. structure and knowledge of content,,specific domains together influence recall of a science expository prose. Necessarily, this entailed the participation of students who possessed ready--made schemata for both science text structures and text-relevant content and the selection of a topic the students were familiarwith. Based on these considerations, fourth year students of the Philippine High School were made the target population. Eighty-seven students participated. They were asked to read a naturally-occurring text about rain and then recall what they remembered from what they have read.Four important findings resulted from this study. First, majority of the students used different conceptually related top-level structures in organizing their recall. Second, there is no difference in recall of idea units found in the text. among students using different Top-levelstructures. Third, a substantial number of idea units thatwere recalled by the students were not in the text; students who used the text's top-level structure recalled a significantly greater number of idea units not found in thetext. Fourth, there is a significant difference in recallperformance among students using different top-level structures. These results provide evidence that schemata for text structure and schemata for text-relevant content do influence what high science ability students recall fromtheir reading of a science expository text. Specifically, they suggest that recall performance of students are influenced '.ay the use of the text's top-level structure and of prviously held schemata related to the text's content.
