Provincial radio programming : a case studies of two radio stations in Tuguegarao, Cagayan

Abstract

Provincial radio programming focusing on two AM radio stations: DWPE (612 KHZ) operated by the Philippine Broadcasting Service; and DZTG (729 KHZ) owned by Radio Philippines Network were determined and analyzed.Specifically, the study aimed to find out the program tupes in each station as well as the characteristics or description of each program type; determine the length of time alloted to each program type; determine the different languages or dialects used in each program type; find out the programs used in dissemination of developmental messages; identify the factors that affect program decision making; and make a comparison of radio programming between stations DWPE and DZTG.Station DWPE Radyo ngBayan is located at Marcos SportsComplex, Tuguegarao, Cagayan. Operating at 10 kilowatts, it startedits operation in 1985. Primary audience are the 29 towns of Cagayan,northern towns of Isabela and the whole of Kalinga Apayao. FromMondays to Saturdays, DWPE broadcasts fur 17 hours while on Sundays, for only 14 hours.On the other hand, DZTG at 46 Rizal Street, Tuguegarao, Cagayantransmits at a power of five kilowatts. First heard in 1962, itsprimary audience is the whole of Region 2. DZTG goes on air for 17 hours, seven days a week.Being a government station, DWPE's schedule is geared towards development-oriented programs since 11 hours (64.71%) of their broadcasts per day are devoted to Public Affairs programs compared to DZ1G, a commercial station, which has only two hours and 15 •inutes (13.23%) time alloted for said program.However, DZTG has more Entertainment programs since 10 hours and 15 minutes are devoted to Music Personality programs compared to DWPE which has only three hours and 30 minutes (20.59) for the programs.For other types of programs, DWPE devotes one hour and 30 minutes (8.82%) toFar• programs with newsbreaks lasting 15 minutes durationincorporated in some of the programs. DZTG Farm programs are onlybroadcast for 45 minutes (4.41%) with newsbreaks having a separate time slot.Both stations have a program answering the three-fold function of radio to inform, educate and entertain.Religious programs are only broadcast at DZTG (two hours and 30 minutes or 14.70%) while DWPE broadcasts a Children's program (two hours or 14.29%)The two stations differ in their format. DWPE adapts straight talk, talk and music and music formats while DZTG adapts music, music and talk formats.
