Effectiveness of four sound slide utilization techniques : an experimental study among the Lembaga Pendidikan Perkebunan students in Yagyakarta, Indonesia

Abstract

This study was an attempt to compare the effectiveness of four sound slide utilization techniques in teaching. One hundred first year students of the Lernbaga Pendidikan Perkebunan (LPP) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia served as respondents and were equally divided into four treatmentgroups: T1 sound slide alone; T2sound slide withoverview lecture; T3 - sound slide with summary lecture, and T4 - sound slide with both overview and summary lectures. The basic material was a 16-minute sound slide material containing 42 color- slides showing what a computer is all about.The results of the study indicated that the four sound slide utilization techniques wore effective in increasing the knowledge level of the respondents. However, sound slidewith overview lecture, sound slide with summary lecture, and sound slide with both overview and summary lectures were found to be superior to sound slide alone in terms of knowledge gain scores. Sound slide with summary lecture and sound slide with both overview and summary lectures were superior to sound slide with overview lecture. No significant difference was observed between sound slide with summary lecture and sound slide with both overview and summary lectures.Field of study, interest in subject matter. and preference for sound slide had no effect on knowledge gain scores of the respondents in each treatment group. Previous experience or familiarity of the respondents with subject matter had no effect on knowledge gain scores of the respondents exposed to sound slide alone and sound slide complemented with overview lecture. However, familiarity with subject matter had a positive effect on knowledge gain scores of respondents exposed to sound slide complemented with summary lecture and sound slide complemented with both overview and summary lectures.
