Abstract

This study was undertaken to 1) describe the development process of the Research Management Learning Package:s; 2) determine the effect of self-instruction with learning package on the knowledge level of learners; and 3) test the relationship between the knowledge level of learners after self-instruction with package and their class level, academic field, sex, age, and prior knowledge on the subject matter.Data for the development process description were gathered through participant observation and triangulated with the process documentation report of an NGO, a video documentary produced by a communication institute, the NGO and RMC, and documents of RMC.To determine the effect of self-instruction with package on the knowledge level of learners, an experiment using pretest-posttest design was conducted with 79 undergraduate students and 18 graduate students of the University of the Philippines Los Banos. Forty seven undergraduate respondents were assigned to the undergraduate treatment group and 32 to the undergraduate control group. Nine graduate respondents were assigned to graduate treatment group and nine to the graduate control group.Frequencies, percentages, means, t-test for paired and for independent samples, chi square and correlation tests were used to analyze data. The results of the process documentation revealed that the development process underwent two stages-- design and prototype development and production and was completed in 21 months. Evaluation was seen to be a critical element in the product development. The results of the experiment on the effect of self-instruction with the learning package ""Motivating Knowledge Workers"" on the knowledge level of learners on the subject matter were as follows:For the undergraduate level, the knowledge level of the respondents on the subject matter was tignifu:antly higher after self-instruction with the package than before self-instruction with the package. The knowledge level of the respondents who engaged in self-instruction with the package was significantly higher than of those who did not engage in self-instruction with the package. For the graduate level, the knowledge level of the respondents on the subject matter was significantly higher after self-instruction with the package than before self-instruction with the package. The knowledge level of the respondents who engaged in self-instruction with the package on the subject matter was not significantly higher than of those who did not engage in self-instruction with the package. The results of the test of relationship between knowledge level on the subject matter after self-instruction with the package and some learner variables were as follows:For the undergraduate level, class level and age were significantly related to the knowledge level while academic field, sex, and prior knowledge on the subject matter were not significantly related to the knowledge level. For the graduate level, age was significantly related to the knowledge level while degree, academic field, sex, and prior knowledge on the subject matter were not significantly related to the knowledge level.
