Abstract

The study sought to determine the communication roles and communication styles of the top-level managers at Isabela State University and to find out what factors could affect managerial effectiveness.Respondents of the study were 14 top-level managers and'll middle-level managers of the academic institution.Data were gathered through a set of self-administered questionnaires, interviews and non-participant observation.Findings revealed that the youngest top-level manager was 38 years old while the oldest was 58 years old. The average age of the top-levelmanagers was 48.71. Majority were males. All top-level managers weremarried. Their educational attainment ranged from BS to PhD degree. The length of service in the organization ranged from 6-42 years with amean of 19.36. On the other hand, the length of service in presentposition ranged from 1-10 years with a mean of 4.21 years. The least number of people directly supervised by the top-level managers was six while the maximum was 31. The average number of peoplethey directly supervised was 16. More top-level managers (64.29%)claimed that they have access to information needed in managing thorganization. On the other hand, more than one half (57.14%) claimed that there were no communication facilities available for use in the University. Likewise, more respondents (64.29%) claimed that not enough funds were available for use by the University. The managers used all the different message types namely:regulative, task, integrative and informative. Majority of them[92.86%) indicated that they very frequently interacted with their staff. Of the eight communicative competence indicators enumerated inthe study, the managers did not encounter any problem at all. Theirpredominant communication role was thatof reporter/adviser andthruster/organizer. The least played role was that of being anupholder/maintainer.On the bases of the assessment of the top-level managers, the middle-level managers and this researcher, majority of theIsabela State University top-level managers were problem-solvers, indicating that theyhave an open effective communication. It was likewise found that thetop-level managers were effective at work based on their self evaluation using McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y and the evaluation of the middlelevel managers, using Rensis Likert's management style evaluationsheet. However, based on the above findings, the relationship between theindependent variables socio-demographicCharacteristics,communication-related characteristics and organization-relatedcharacteristics and the dependent variable --- managerial effectivenessan not be put to test because all the top-level managers were effective thereby making fifty percent of the cells zero.
