Abstract

This study was conducted to attain the following objectives: (1) to explore an alternative technique of capturing farmers' realities; (2) to develop a technique that encourages greater involvement of the research participants in the research process; (3) to discover from farmers the causes of their low income and their proposed solutions to it; and (4) to provide useful, in-depth information to serve as feedback on government's on-going rice production program. To achieve these objectives the study made use of(1) storytelling, which is a traditional andinformal means of communication, and (2) video, amodern communication technology, in the Freireanframework of consciousness-raising. A 15-minute straight narrative type ""storyvideo"" was produced showing a Cabiao farmer airing his views, farming experiences, perceptions, and proposed solutions regarding the topic, ""what keep farmers poor and howcould they rise from poverty."" This was shown to agroup of farmer-leaders from Cabiao, Nueva Ecija. After viewing the storyvideo, a facilitator asked them to comment by way of sharing their own stories -¬their farming experiences, views, perceptions, opinions, and proposed solutions concerning their poverty. Results showed that the technique was able to generate information about farmers' realities. Farmers attributed their problem of low income to several factors but point mainly to government's inability to provide full support as the main cause of their poverty. For them, the support here meant: . (1) balancing the price of farm inputs and palay;. (2) providing postharvest facilities; (3) stopping the collection of irrigation fees; (4) providing the crop insurance benefits due them; (5) enforcing government's ceiling price for palay; (6) providing job security and retirement benefits; and (7) providing support to the non-government organizations (NGO) by easing the lending procedure of Land Bank.
