Socio-phychological factors affecting rural women's willingness to participate in development broadcasting activities

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the socio-psycholegical factor's affecting rural women's willingness to participate in development broadcasting activities.Five hundred fifty-seven randomly selected rural women, IS years old and above, single or married, were surveyed . They were interviewed using a questionnaire in Tagalgq.Results showed that the majnrity of the respondents were reletive lV young and middle-aged. Most them were married for 20 yoarsand lees to their husbands who were mostly middle-aged and old. They had been blessed with five children and below. Almost all of the respondents were Catholics and were college degree holders. A great majoritv of them had been ree=Aents of their reepertive baranlay5 for T-0 years and below.The bigger percentage of the respondents were non-members of organizations. Reasons for non-membership were lack of awareness ofthe eKistence of orgenieations, lack o- inclination, interest,time and the confidence to make contact. However, those who were members sought membership in women's clubs . They had been involved in erganizetional activities 114e censtruction of nublic facilities, livelinood, fund raising an reiigieue undertakings. Wtat most of them did in these preiects was to so)icit meterial and monetary eupport.They said they narticirlted often.The majority of the reseondeets did not participate in cemmonity related aetivittes. They reasoned that they were unaware of the existence o4 community-related prejects and they lacked the time and the inclination to be involved Tn other activities. Meanwhile, those who participeted said they were mostly involved in heautificatiee and cleanliness projerts initiated in the barangay. They ceared r they construct=d garbage eane and they conducted census and surveys. Their participation was voluntary hut they admitted that they rarely did it,Hest 14 the respondents' family members were not involved inorganizational/community-related AetIvities. However, those who had family members perticipating named their husbands as theparticipants. The respondents' f‘mily members were mostly memhere ofcivic organizations, barenclay-besed' croups and government Almost all the respondente visited town. Most of these town goers said they rarely visited town but there were also those who said theyoffer did. Also. a big maiority o- the responderts did not oo to town to oet tnformation because mo.:it 04 them did not see The need to do it. However, those who did seek information in town souob information onliveJihood seurees, news and personal coarerns.Respondents defined their sociAlecsychologic7A1 values. They lave high regard for the acguisit1on e4- -.flototedne and skills as a way to improve oneself. They also eepressed respect for tne wise use o+ time and the necessity n-F grouping together to find solutions to problems. In a deoup, they upheld the values of interaction, coeperatton and respect- But still they did not Rny strong cemmitment to eroupgoals. The respondents desired R society that is more equal in its distribution of power and wealth and peopled by citizens more concerned with their fellowmen, For themselves, the respondents wanted Netter lives. They were uncertain about the realities of their present condition which could be the reason why they still could not make community affairs their concern. Ahout themselves, respondents did rot feel eenfinent e'out voicing their own opinion and eepresstng their own ileas in 4 croup_ What th,=y fNit rnn+Tdent mint} was tackling an unfamiliar task.A great majority of the respondents ev:pressed willingness to participate in a development radioprogrambecause they were interested to do it. alhen further asked if they were till willing to do it without remuneratien, most said yes,listenership to the radir program.
