Communicating emergency preparedness and behavioral response among residents vulnerable to Taal volcanic hazards in Bgy. Gulod, Laurel, Batangas, Philippines

Abstract

Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior by Ajzen (1991), this study determined the factors that influenced the disaster preparedness among residents vulnerable to the Taal volcanic hazards in Brgy. Gulod, Laurel, Batangas, Philippines. Data were gathered from March to April 2018 among 147 respondents chosen by stratified random sampling. The respondents had sufficient knowledge, a positive attitude, positive subjective norms, and adequate perceived behavioral control over volcanic eruption and disaster preparedness behavior. They sought information about disaster preparedness from television, barangay officials and announcements, and radio. For disaster preparedness behavior, majority of the respondents have practiced preparing for a volcanic eruption. They prepared a supply kit at home, "Go" kit for work, childcare items for emergency, a family communication plan, and a specific meeting place during an emergency. They have also undergone drills for emergency situations, sought additional disaster-related information, and volunteered to help during emergencies. Majority were also willing to pay for disaster preparedness resources and facilities with Php 499 or lower. Disaster preparedness behavior (dependent variable) was significantly correlated with 1) knowledge on volcanic hazards and disaster preparedness, and 2) perceived control over the behavior (disaster preparedness). Meanwhile, willingness to pay (independent variable) was also significantly correlated with knowledge on volcanic hazards and disaster preparedness (independent variables). The more knowledge they had through trainings and seminars and other information sources, and the more they perceived the behavior to be easy to perform, the more they practiced the 11 behaviors in disaster preparedness for any eventual volcanic eruption.
