Abstract
This study was a survey which investigated instructional media utilization practices and factors affecting media use by the faculty members of Central Mindanao University (CMU).Respondents of the study were obtained from the faculty roster published in the 1988-89 University Catalogue. Except those who were out of the campus on training or on study leave, all the remaining served as respondents to the study. Out of the 177 possible respondents. 143 returned usable questionnaires providing data from which findings were made based upon descriptive statistical analysis. As far as teaching experience was concerned, close to one-third (29.4% and 28.6%) have had from 11 to 15 and more than 20 years experience. The majority of the respondents had never most of the media equipment listed. Only the overhead projector and the slide projector could be satisfactorily operated by the majority of the respondents. Results showed that the top five instructional media used excluding the chalkboard, were: charts, graphs, illustrations; specimens; exhibits; models: and overhead projector and transparencies. It was also revealed that the top five problems associated with media use, were:a.The budget for instructional media is not sufficient to provide for my needs.b. Instructional materials frequently are not available when needed.c. Instructional media are too expensive for the results obtained.d. Searches for materials in my specific content areareveal few available materials.e. I do not have enough training to useeffectivelyselectedinstructionalmedia.Majority of the respondents are eager to try to useinstructional media they have not used yet. Others who have beenusing instructional media either want to continue or expand their present level of use.Furthermore, the respondents rated as inadequate both the provisions of their colleges in terms of producing instructional materials and the suitability of their classrooms for use of the media. In general, the respondents expressed interest for in-service training in instructional media and their training priorities, were: a) audiovisual equipment operation and maintenance, b) utilization of audiovisual media, and c) production of soundslide sets and non-photographic production of overhead transparencies. To increase media utilization, the respondents identified the following as the most needed improvements: provide more budget allocation for media; provide better program assistance to faculty members regarding planning, designing, and producing materials; and arrange for regular media demonstrations and workshops for faculty members.
