The effectiveness and usefulness of ethnovideographic documentations as an input in the research agenda setting process

Abstract

This study produced an ethnovideographic documentation (ED) on farmers' research utilization, information needs, and problems in cultivating medicinal plants at Cileungsi Subdistrict, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia and presented to 29 researchers of the Central Research Institute for Industrial Crops (CRIIC), Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, to determine its effectiveness and usefulness as an input in CRIIC's research agenda setting process.Data were gathered through entry and post measure questionnaires and analyzed using point estimation and Nilcoxon signed rank. Data gathered through audiotape discussions were analyzed descriptively.The ethnovideographic documentation technique was found to be significantly effective and useful in facilitating the research agenda setting activity. The respondents agreed that ED was capable of presenting information which the respondents could not gather by conventional measures, viewing the video was not a waste of time, video is animportant tool for setting research agenda, it gaveinputs for formulating research agenda, and provided therespondents new information. The respondents would consider the message in the video as basis in formulating research agenda. They also perceived the development of ethnovideographic documentation of farmers' research utilization, information needs, and problems a good idea.
