Abstract
Man is an interactive being whose interaction with others imply communication, since to interact is to communicate. Communication thus, is a fundamental and vital process of human existence. Every human existence is lived within a given cultural setting, suggesting a link (some sort of relationship and interdependence) between communication and culture. The above assertions pose a problem - the problem being whether there is any real and meaningful link (relationship, interaction and/or interdependence) between communication and culture. It is this problem that forms the basis for the present study. In an attempt to investigate the problem and arrive at some possible solution, the objective of the study had been to investigate if culture (values) in any way influence and/or determine communication (interpersonal). And in the event that the former doe:, influence or determine the latter, to critically examine 'why' that is so; and also to investigate whether there are some structural imbalances in interpersonal communication sit, iations as a result of cultural factors. In other to achieve the objective of the study, a methodological approach that was basically ethnographic (combining both qualitative and quantitative methods while making sue of case study method) was adopted. The adoption of such methodological approach necessitated the use of different procedures in data collection - participant observation, small group discussion, siructuredinterview schedule and in-depth interviews.Analysis of the data collected was both qualitative and quantitative in nature. The former involved the use of reflective and interpretative approach; while the latter entailed using descriptive statistics. The study was conducted among the Hanunoo-Mangyans, a cultural group that typifies the problem to be investigated. Findings indicate that:1. The values of the Hanunoo-Mangyans function as criteria for the selection on their modes of conduct;2. They have their own pattern of interpersonal communication behavior (which are modes of conduct);3. Their interpersonal communication behavior are determined, influenced or affected by their values;4. Their values seemingly are not neutral nor are they all- benevolent, as some of the values seem to be are biased towards certain members of the society thus, giving them advantages over other members; and5. They seem to experience some covert tensions/conflicts in some of their interpersonal communication among themselves and also with someoutsiders as a result of the nature and content of their values.
