Abstract
This study was conducted in Leyte, Philippines from 2022 to 2024, to identify sweetpotato varieties that has potential tolerance to waterlogging stress; determine the agro-physiological responses of the sweetpotato varieties to waterlogging stress; assess the morphological and biochemical reaction of sweetpotato grown under waterlogging stress; determine the productivity and profitability of the sweetpotato varieties grown under waterlogging stress conditions; and recommend varieties of sweetpotato in areas prone to waterlogging stress. A screenhouse trial was done to evaluate the reaction of 15 sweetpotato varieties to waterlogging stress imposed at early vegetative stage. Six varieties were selected from the screenhouses trial and were subjected to field evaluation based on morphological characteristics, growth, yield performance, profitability and biochemical responses to waterlogging stress imposed during storage root formation stage. Majority of the observed morphological, physiological, productivity and biochemical characteristics of sweetpotato are affected by the waterlogging stress treatment. Waterlogging stress imposed either early vegetative stage or during storage root formation reduces chlorophyll content, number of storage roots per plant and weight of storage roots resulting in lower HI, root-shoot ratio, marketable root and net income. Sweetpotato storage roots harvested from waterlogged plant have higher total soluble solid, lower in protein content, but no variation the pH values. NSIC Sp30 and NSIC Sp35 had potential tolerance to waterlogging stress imposed whether at early vegetative stage or storage root formation stage as shown by high storage root yield harvest index and root-shoot ratio.
