Characterization of heirloom rice production areas in Mountain Province, Philippines
Date

Abstract
This study was conducted to characterize the heirloom rice production areas in Sadanga, Barlig and Natonin. Mountain Province and assess the associated production constraints to come up with recommendations that can improve productivity and sustainability of heirloom rice, Using the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) framework of land evaluation, the study sites were classified in terms of their suitability to heirloom rice production. The farmers' cultural management practices were also documented through interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders.
Current physical and chemical soil properties present critical limitations. Most of the study sites in Sadanga are classified as moderately suitable (S2) to marginally suitable (S3) due to limitations like soil fertility, texture and shallow soil depth. Only the site in Belwang was found highly suitable (S1). The sites in Barlig were also classified as moderately suitable (S2) to marginally suitable ($3) with similar limitations as in Sadanga and with elevated concentrations of basic cations. Except for the study site in Saliok which is moderately suitable (S2), the rest of the study sites in Natonin are marginally suitable ($3). Farmers in Sadanga and Barlig are practicing both traditional and conventional heirloom rice farming while those in Natonin still practice conventional heirloom rice farming. The LUTs in Sadanga, Barlig, and Natonin reflect low-input, labor-intensive systems deeply rooted in tradition yet showing early signs of diversification and technological adoption. Enhancing productivity and sustainability will require integrated strategies that respect indigenous practices while introducing appropriate innovations in mechanization, nutrient management, and market access.
