Abstract
The general objective of this dissertation is to identify rice germplasm resources which can be used to develop varieties resistant to brown planthopper (BPH) in reducing the incidence of rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV) and rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV), and to map loci linked to resistance to RRSV and BPH, RRSV, RGSV, and have been causing serious damage to rice production in Southeast Asia. Among 571 traditional rice cultivars and 79 wild rice species screened for reactions to RGSV, RRSV and BPH in Vietnam, Thailand and IRRI [International Rice Research Institute], 21 wild rice accessions and 27 rice cultivars were re-evaluated for reactions to RGSV, RRSV and BPH. Nine wild rice accessions including O. punctata, O. officinalis and O. minuta showed resistance to RRSV and RGSV. AC1613 showed strong resistance to BPH by antibiosis and low RRSV infection rate. Kalu Samba exhibited the highest level of antixenosis against BPH. Ketan Bawuk, Pae Ndolarombo 2 and Randa Ugel appeared to be tolerant to RRSV. Two QTLs, qNMBPH4 and qRRSV4, were mapped within 21 cM on the short arm of chromosome 4 and flanked by RM16281 and RM16284 with the peak marker RM16282. qNMBPH4 showed the peak LOD score of 9.5, and explained 46.7% of phenotypic variation, while qRRSV4 showed the peak LOD score of 6.8, and explained 39.3% of phenotypic variation. The QTL found in AC1613 can be exploited to develop rice varieties for areas prone to damages from BPH and RRSV.
