Abstract
The study sought to answer the problem: Is community theater an effective participatory strategy for environmental information systems? It has the following objectives: 1) Explore how communities may participate in identifying problems and needs of the community-related to environmental protection; 2) Document the processes involved in the various stages of community-theater organizing process; 3) Analyze the factors affecting the process of community theater; 4) Determine if community theater is an effective participatory strategy for environmental information systems; and 5) Identify policy options on the use of community theater as a participatory strategy for environmental information system.The community profile of Puroks4, 5, and 6 of rlayondon, Los Baillos, Laguna was determined through a survey and interview of key-informants. The environmentalinformation system focused on waste management. Primaryaudience identified were the barangay officials and theyouth. Secondary audience were the other residents of thecommunity.The problematique analysis measured the degree of participation of the participants in terms of problem-identification, problem-analysis, and problem solving, the result of which determined the message design.Through a community theater workshop, 15 youth from the community were able to come up with a community theater presentation on waste management.Process documentation and evaluation showed that therewas active participation among the youth. The communitytheater as an environmental information system increased and improved the knowledge, attitude and practice on waste management.Hence, community theater should be mandated in the program of the Sangguniang Kabataan to develop on the talentsof the youth and address environmental issues.
