Maranao rice farmers' perceptions of the credibility characteristics of an extension agent

Abstract

The study was conducted among 150 Maranao rice farmers in three selected barrios of Lanao del Sur. It attempted to answer the following questions: 1) What characteristics do iglaranao rice farmers associate with a credible extension agent? 2) I-Prom the point of view of Maranao rice farmers, towhat degree should the extension agents possess such characteristics? 3) What characteristics of Maranao rice farmers are related to their perception of the characteristics of a credible extension agent?The characteristics of a credfole extension agent, which a great majority of the respondents indicated should be highly possessed by him, are traits primarily associated with sociability. Secondary traits identified by the farmers were associated with safety, dynamism and qualification, which were of almost the same significance. Also, the respondents indicated their preference for -au extension agent who is a Muslim and a Maranao and who under¬stands their values.On the third and main issue of the study, the following were the significant findings: a) Farmers with high education and high exposure to information sources prefer extension agents with high safety, qualification and sociability traits; b) Farmers with high social status prefer extension agents with high safety and qualification traits; c) Farmers with exposure to extension agents prefer extension agents /with high qualification traits; and d) Farmers with low farming experience prefer extension agents with high qualification and sociability traits. Collapsing the four dimensions of credibility into an overall concept, it :was found ; that the higher the farmer's education, exposure to information sources, social status and exposure to extension agents, the more they affect his value Of a credible extension ageat.
