Date

Abstract

A two-sphased study on perception of pictorial and visual symbols vas conducted in three Philippine barrios. The first phase of the study vas a survey among 100 respondents to find out how certain pictorial and visual symbols are perceived by a rural aud-i ience and to determine some characteristics of the rural audience that influence perception, The second phase of the study was a series of three experiments aimed to find out the effect on perception of three types of visual presentation, namely, appeal, visual rendition, and color. The findings indicate that rural people generally intorpret the meanings of pictorial and visual symbols according to the degree of realism portrayed by these symbols. Thus; pictorial symbols were found tobegenerallyunderstood much better than visual symbols. The respondents' characteristics found to be significantly associated with perception were age, educations and previous exposure to similar visuals. Sex was not a significant factor of perception. No significant differences were observed between the positive and negative appeal posters, between the photograph- and drawing-. posters, and between the color and blaclv-and..white posters in torusof the awareness, recognition, interpretation, and attitude components of perception. However, the positive appeal poster and the colored poster were rated highly by an overwhelming majority of the respondents in terms of the interest component of pcl-ception.
