In vivo inhibition of sugarcane invertase

Abstract
A study was conducted at the Department of Agronomy and Sugar Technology Program Anlaytical Laboratories, UPLB, to investigate the invertase enzyme inhibitory effect of bactericide CMA (27.2% dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and 27.2% dimethyl ethyl benzyl ammonium chlorie); sodium metasillicate, ripener MBR 1345-4s (3-Trifluoronomethylsulfononamide-p-acetotoluidide) and three detergent "Tide" (C₈-C₁₈ alkyl sulfate) concentrations, 2%, 5%, and 7%, in relation to storage durations. Statistical analysis of the indices of incersion, namely, gravity purity, reducing sugar and invertase activity showed an inhibitory effect of both detergent and ripener. Even at 2% concentration, the detergent could produce effective inhibition. Likewise, the ripener caused gravity purity increase during the 4-day storage. On the other hand, 5% sodium metasilicate and 10% bactericide were found to be insufficient to arrest deterioration. Further study on mode of application and use of greater concentration to facilitate absorption by cane stalk including the economics of the ripener used was suggested.
