Change in Dietary Pattern and Physical Activity Among Young Adults in Ilocos Sur During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The corona virus disease, widely known as COVID-19 has become a major outbreak in the entire world, affecting the lives of people which includes their dietary consumption and physical activity levels. This study aims to determine the changes in dietary pattern and physical activity among young adults (18-35 years old) who are residents of Ilocos Sur during the pandemic. A descriptive study was carried out among 125 residents and convenience sampling was used. The data were gathered through online dissemination through Google forms. Changesin dietary pattern were observed . Increased consumption was observed in food items namely bread, noodles and pasta, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, sugary drinks and others (chips). However, decreased consumption was seen in corn, fats and oils, milk products, seafood, organ meats, sugary foods, and savory and fried foods. Rice revealed no change in consumption, as well as for starchy roots and tubers. Meanwhile, sugars and syrups had equal values for decreased consumption and no change and whole milk also had equal values for increased and decreased consumption. In the case for physical activity changes, majority of the respondents have answered increase in activity for most of the mentioned physical activities such as running, walking, bicycling, dancing, push-ups/sit ups, climbing the stairs, laundry, house cleaning, and gardening. No change was observed in lifting weights and sports.
