Abstract

Rice straw, rice hull and sawdust as organic mulch and polyethylene black plastic as inorganic mulch were used as mulching materials on Red cowpea (VCS 6-1), radish (60 days var. ) and pechay (Black Behi) grown successively for three cropping seasons• The organic mulching materials were incorporated into the soil before planting radish and pechay.

No definite effect on plant yield was observed on the three vegetable crops except for cowpea wherein a decrease it yield in the sawdust mulched plot was observed. This decrease, however, was due to mosaic infection rather than to the mulch.

No significant difference among treatments was also observed on soil pH and bulk density while a significant increase in the water holding capacity of soil was obtained in rice straw and sawdust compared to the control of rice hull or polyethylene black plastic mulched plots.

The over all results suggest that further tests will likely show real effects of the mulches.
