Abstract

The major practice was conducted at a 2-hectare nursery of Hortonet Distribution Service in Sitio Tubero, Barangay Mabacan, Calauan, Laguna from May 2009 to June 2009 and continued from January 2010 to February 2010.

The major activities in the nursery included propagation, repotting, watering, weeding, fertilizer application and delivery to the market.

Rooting of leaf cuttings of Zamioculcas zamiifolia (Engl.) under plastichouse conditions and stem cuttings of Schelllera arboricola (Merr.) under intermittent mist were performed in the nursery. Watering was done in the morning or when the plants needed water. Sand, coir dust/coco fiber, burnt rice hull, and coco chips were the components of potting medium used. Repotting was done on a regular basis to provide more space for the growing plant. Weeds were controlled by handweeding. Pesticides were applied only after the rainy seasons and in the late afternoon when pest incidence is high. Fertigation was practiced. Fertilizer combination of complete (14-14-14) and area (46-0-0) was used. Cleaning and sanitation of the whole area was done. Marketing practices include sorting, hauling, postharvest handling, packaging, and loading and unloading of plants for delivery.

Prize of ornamental plants depends on the species and size of plants and its container. Zamioculcaz zamiifolia (Engl.) plants which are planted in 15-cm soft pots are sold at P97.00/plant. The Schefflera arboricola (Merr.) planted in 4x4x19" polyethylene bags is sold at P50.00/plant. The two mentioned ornamental plants are profitable regardless of season. Net income ranges from P14,000.00 to P17,000.00 per month.

T o have a functional and quality nursery, factors and processes like people, products, budget, cultural practices, infrastructures, facilities and equipment, market and postproduction practices must be considered.
